A pair of tall leather boots works well when riding a motorcycle. This will protect the riders ankles from being burned on the exhaust pipes and from debris and stones. On a bike it is important to have the soles of the shoes be grippy; these will make the soles of the shoes like an extra set of tires. The feet are what hold up the motorcycle when you are at rest.

Some bikers may where fashion boots or cowboy boots, but these have slippery soles. Fashion boots are available in a work style with grippy rubber soles. Other bikers prefer a boot with Velcro or latches rather than a lace up boot. First they take less time to put on, and second the laces may come loose and get caught in moving parts, like the drive train.

Motorcycle Beginning Safety: Tires and Controls

Riding motorcycles have been the cool thing to do for a long time and maybe you are just beginning to ride and you want to make sure you do it right. Well, you are reading the right article! Riding a motorcycle is an exhilarating experience but there needs to be a reverence and respect for the power that you have when riding your bike. Vehicles have radically increased in power and speed over the past decades. They also have increased dramatically in safety but this does not mean that we are invincible on the road. This is especially the case when motorcycles do not have a large metal cage to protect you from accidents along with all the other safety precautions that a car has over a bike. All the more reason you need to be safe on your bike. You do not want to have a tragic story on the news so please drive safe.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation was nice enough to come up with a great acronym to you keep safe. It is a simple checklist to go through before you hit the open road. I'll share each word to the acronym and why it is important to check each of these in terms of road safety. This is the first article in a three part series which explains T-CLOCS. Each article will explain two of the letters of this acronym. The acronym that the Motorcycle Safety Foundation uses is T-CLOCS which stands for:

T – Tires & Wheels
C – Controls (This includes any levers, pedal, cables, hoses & your throttle)
L – Lights (headlights, turn signals, mirrors, battery and any other light your bike might have)
O – Oil (fluid levels)
C – Chassis (your frame, your suspension, your chain, etc.)
S – Stands (center stand and / or kickstand)

Tires & Wheels- It is crucial to keep checking your tires. It is beneficial for your gas mileage to check the air in your tire. The better you take care of your tires, the better they will serve you. Also it is good to know where you are going and how long you'll be on the road so that you'll know the condition of your tires. They recommend changing your tires between 8,000 miles to 12,000 miles to stay safe. You do not want to be stuck on the road with a popped tire. You also have to take into account how hard you are riding. If you are all in and hit the road at a heavy pace and very consistent then you are going to want to be checking more frequently.

Controls – This one will be more obvious to check because these are what make your bike run properly. Check and make sure that everything that is connected to a cable works properly. Make sure everything is working smoothly because do not want anything done up. For the brakes, push the bike in each direction and use both brakes to make sure they are working properly. Make sure the when it brakes, that it is firm and not lose at all. You can also test it out as soon as you get on the road to make sure it is road worthy. Also, make sure you check your throttle that it looks firm in its position and it is not in a loose position where it could have snapped which can leave you on the side of the road.

Motorcycle luggage comes in a wide variety of choices to select from. It can have hard and soft sided cases. Luggage with hard sided cases is more bulky and expensive compared to soft luggage. The luggage with soft sided cases has limited storage capacity. Such luggage finds use to carry less number of marriages while on bikes. The colors, sizes, and prices vary too. Motorcycle Flames to Customize Your Bike

Motorcycle flames are a popular style of motorcycle custom painting. They can be done in many different ways. Motorcycle flames are also one of the oldest ways of custom painting. Back in the Fifties (and before) people would paint the red and yellow flames down the side of their hot rod.

Since the they have been done in solid colors with or without pinstripes on their edges. they have been done with "pearl" colors usually without a pinstriped edge, this is called "ghost flames".

Pinstriped flames are just an outline of the flames. They can be masked and sprayed or hand striped with a "dagger" brush. The points of the flame can be "tipped" with a slightly lighter color. They can be shaded like is done with lettering sometimes, to give an illusion that the stripes are "raised".

A way that I like is where you paint the background color then do the motorcycle flames, stripes and graphics that you want first. Those are usually used using shades of golds and silver, maybe black, then covering everything with a "candy" color. The tank is then one color that you can see your design through.

Realistic flames are the newest type of Motorcycle flames. Done in multiple of regular and candy color layers it gives a very effective look.

These are several methods to do flames. There are many ways to alter and combine methods. Flame painting has been around a long time and looks like it will be around a long time to come. Keeping the same ways and also changing and coming up with new ways.

Motorcycle Suspension – Basic Set Up

Modern sporting motorcycles can come with a near dizzying array of suspension adjustment. Pre-load, compression damping, rebound, high-speed damping, low-speed damping, etc. Where to start?

Before you start looking over your bike to see what we're talking about, please note this article is primarily intended for the sportbike rider. Most cruisers have little or no suspension adjustment. You either live with what the factoryave you, you have your suspension components upgraded with after market units, or have the internal bits replaced by a professional.

The easiest and most important adjustment you can make is to set the static sag. Sag is just what it sounds like – how much the bike sags when you're on it.

Ideally your sag should be from 25 to 30 mm, or 1 to 1 in inches, on most bikes. To find out where your sag is, you'll need a helper. Dress up in all your usual riding apparel, including helmet, leathers, boots, etc. You want to set your sag using the same weight as when you ride. While standing next to the bike, push down on the tail once or twice to make sure the suspension is at its normal resting position.

Using a dowel rod, yard stick, or similar device, measure the distance from the ground to a particular point on the motorcycle. Turn signals or a point on the seat or frame will work fine. Just make sure the point you measure from is not covered up when you're on the bike. OK, got the measurement? Either write down the measurement (in inches or millimeters) or simply mark the spot on your rod / stick.

Now get on the motorcycle, in full gear. This is where your helper is needed. For the most accurate measurement, try to hold the bike fully vertical with both your feet on the pegs. In this position, take another measurement. See the difference? That is your sag. If it's smaller than 1 inch or greater than 1 in inches, you'll need to adjust the pre-load on your forks and / or shock to get the desired results. Increase pre-load (typically a clockwise turn of the adjusting screw or collar) a little at a time to reduce your sag. Decreasing pre-load will increase the amount your bike sags.

Adjusting rebound and compression damping is probably more complicated, and requires riding your bike and trying different settings over time. More compression damping in front reduces the amount your bike will dive under braking. More in the back will reduce how much the rear end squats under power. Too much compression damping can cause the bike to ride rough, transmitting every bump in the road to you without absorbing much. If you're only riding on a smooth racetrack, more compression damping might be a good thing. If you ride on gnarly back roads, you'll probably want to soften up your settings.

Rebound damping affects how much your wheels "bounce" off the brakes and wallow under power. Too much rebound damping and your suspension will not react fast enough to properly follow bumps in the road. Your forks or shock can get "packed down" by repeated bumps, which reduces your suspension travel and can lead to a very poor ride, or worse. Too little rebound damping in the front or rear and your bike will be walling around like a '68 Cadillac, making it very unpleasant and hard to control.

Your mission is to find the right balance for you and your riding style. Usually it's best to start out with the settings your bike came with from the factory. There's a reason why they're set where they are. From there, spend a little time on the bike. Is it too stiff? Does it wallow? Pay attention to how the different ends of the bike feel. Adjust accordingly, but not too much. We suggest adjusting in increments of one click at a time, until you find the sweet spot you're looking for.

Once you get your favorite settings dialed in, you can start playing around with them a little at different times. For example, you might want to tighten things up a bit for a fast track day at California Speedway. Or you might want to loosen them up a notch or 2 if you're planning to ride Carmel Valley Road (ask me how I know!). Whether or not you choose to leave the settings alone or make occasional adjustments, making your motorcycle handle better for you and your riding style lower lap times, and will definitely enhance your riding enjoyment.

Chrome TV: Google Chrome Extension

I do not often watch live television over the Internet, I have a Dish Network system at home and TV's in three rooms but my computer room is not one of them. When CNN covered the Chilean miner rescue was one of the main times I wanted to keep tabs of live TV while I was working on my computers. This is where the Chrome TV extension for Google Chrome comes in. This extension allows you to search for and tune in to live television feeds from across the Internet, I was happy to see it found and fed my CNN live over the Internet where I was able to listen in and keep tabs on it while I continued my work.

News, Weather, HBO, Cartoons the Chrome TV toolbar extension for Chrome lists dozens of channels you can tune into live and watch over your Chrome browser. This is a great way to have some background noise or feed playing while you multitask and get some work done, or if you need to keep track of sports you will find ESPN streaming live as well.

When you first install the Chrome TV extension you will see a little TV icon show up on the right hand side of your browser URL bar, click on this icon and you will see a list of channels present themselves and you also get a search bar to find a specific television or cable station you are looking for:

You can find local TV stations from around the world and a quick test showed dozens of television stations from Africa, Asia or Europe.

As mentioned, I may only use this plugin for News as news is among the only things I consistently like like having on in the background. I like knowing what is happening in the world and CNN tends to be on at least 12 hours a day in my house downstairs in the background anyway.

Future Soldiers – What Can You Bring To Basic Training?

The most commonly asked questions recruits ask today is “What Can You Bring to Basic Training?” There are several things you can pack up for boot camp but you don’t want to forget these items such as running shoes, a cell phone, stationery supplies, a debit card, cash and also civilian clothes. After all, you want to have the best experience as possible with the least amount of problems in basic training. Here are some of the few things your allowed to take with you to boot camp.

Running shoes. You can bring your own running shoes to basic. You can bring your running shoes (tennis shoes) but it’ll be up to your drill sergeants on whether they’ll let you wear them or not. Some drill sergeants will make you buy the shoes that they sell at reception. It depends on where you go to training and some drill sergeants let Soldiers wear their own shoes and they didn’t have to buy them.

Cell Phones. You can bring your own cell phone but it’ll be up to the drill sergeant’s decision if you’ll receive any phone privileges (cell phone or phone booth). You can keep your cell phone during reception but once you’re at basic then you’ll have to hand them over to the drill sergeants. You will not get them back until you start white phase or every other Sundays.

Stationary Supplies. You can take your own stationery supplies such as paper, envelopes and stamps or you can buy them while you are at basic training. You have the freedom to write letters every night and have it sent out to a family or friend every day. You will have to do 10 push ups for every letter that you receive during mail call which is worth it.

Debit Card. It is highly recommended that you bring your own debit card tied to your account. You will have to resupply later for personal hygiene’s and to withdraw money from the ATM to pay for haircuts at the PX. Some things are not free in training and you’ll have to reach into your pocket sometimes to pay for the basics such as a haircut or if you want to buy a class yearbook.

Address book. Bring an address book listing your family members and next to kin. It’s very important to have a mailing address of someone so that you can send letters and add them to your life insurance, emergency contact and beneficiary when you in-process during the reception battalion.

Cash. Bring a few extra dollars but not more than $50 dollars. You may never know what might happen during your journey to boot camp. You might need to get a cab or buy something to eat.

Civilian Clothes. Bring the clothes on your back because on the first day you arrive to the reception battalion, the Army will issue you a lot of uniforms and gear. You will wear your PT’s or ACU uniform. You are not allowed to wear your civilian clothes anymore and you must dress according to the uniform of that day.

Advantages, Disadvantages and Use of Stun Guns

Stun guns have evolved over the past decade to become more effective, safer to use, and more discreet. It is now the case that a stun gun is capable of generating 200,000 volts and up, which is enough to floor a man and leave him disabled for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. The gun works through being pressed against the attackers body, before releasing an electronic charge that is high in voltage, and low in amps, meaning that it is effective at disabling the attacker while reducing the chance of causing damage. When an assailant comes in contact with the charge, they will go through a few seconds of excruciating pain, their muscles will spasm, their blood sugar level will become depleted, and the victim should have sufficient time to escape and contact emergency services.

In order to understand the advantages and disadvantages of stun guns, it is firstly necessary to gain an appreciation of how the device works – and the misconceptions that surround it. Stun guns will not cause long term damage to the attacker, even if they have a heart condition, because the high voltage is multiplied by a low current rendering the charge less deadly. Unlike an electrical chair, which has the purpose of killing a person, a stun gun is a product that is developed as a means of disabling, rather than causing damage to, the attacker. When compared to other personal safety equipment and apparatus, it is often considered to be one of the most attacker-friendly options, despite the abrupt and certain nature by which it will disable a person. Another common misconception surrounds whether or not the victim can get a shock through touching the attacker. The answer to this is no, with the reason being that the attackers body will absorb the charge.

An advantage of stun guns is that they now come in many shapes in forms, making them easier to use quickly and effectively. Many new shapes are more discreet and also more practical to carry. Various types of stun guns include the cell phone stun gun, the stun gun flashlight, the stun baton, the stun pen, the raptor stun gun, the small fry mini stun gun, the stun stick, the expandable baton and other variations such as the rechargeable stun gun. A stun gun can be particularly effective when a victim has already been grasped by the attacker and the stun gun is available for use. Stun guns also require less accuracy than other devices and are often enough of a threat to deter an attacker from actually attacking in many cases.

Although there are many advantages of using a stun gun as your personal security instrument of choice, there are also a few disadvantages that have to be considered. First, the victim will have to get close enough to the attacker in order to touch them with their weapon. In the instance where the attacker has a larger weapon, or gun, the stun gun could be rendered useless. The same applies when the attacker is discreet enough to approach from the back or side, although it should be noted that the victim could still be able to arm themselves provided their stun gun is easily accessible.
